mRNA can mediate rapid and transient expression of temporally critical genes or reporters that need to produce strong signals because it only needs to cross the cell membrane, rather than the nuclear envelope like DNA or most viral vectors, to be translated.

Commonly used reporters, such as fluorescent proteins and luciferase, can be efficiently expressed as mRNA, especially when using Allele Reagent’s palette of fluorescent proteins, which are often the brightest in their spectral group*.

Allele’s custom mRNA service team can integrate these reporters into subcellular localization-specific markers, of which membrane-bound mNeonGreen mRNA and nuclear mScarlet3 are outstanding examples.

Similarly, Allele’s custom mRNA service can integrate these reporters into various sensors, such as:

Group Ions: Ca²⁺, voltage, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, K⁺

Group Signals: auxin, diacylglycerol (DAG), cAMP, Notch signaling

Even when encoding the same gene, the chemical structures of mRNA—such as the type of cap or modified bases—and physical properties, such as the tendency to form secondary structures, can lead to cell- and, intriguingly, species-specific differences in expression and function. The Allele Reagents team has developed proprietary methods to optimize mRNA molecules for specific cell types.
